We Remember the 9/11 Attack on the Pentagon

* Construction on the Pentagon began on September 11, 1941

* Terrorists flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

* A memorial was opened to the public on September 11, 2008.

About the attack

Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked a Boeing 757 jet airliner carrying more than 11,000 gallons of jet fuel and flew it into the first floor of three of the Pentagon’s five rings. The resulting fire took the lives of 184 people, including 120 Pentagon employees and 64 passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft. Most of the Pentagon employees, both military and civilian, worked for the Navy. Although the fire took 36 hours to extinguish, smoke continued to rise for several more days.

About the memorial

The memorial includes 184 illuminated benches, one for each of the Pentagon employees and passengers, and crew members who lost their lives.
