Washington Place was built between 1842 and 1847 by Captain and Mrs. John Dominis. In those days, the verandas were in place, but the columns were simpler. The enclosed lanai was added later. The couple's son, also named John Dominis, married Lili'uokalani, who would become the queen and the last royal to sit on the throne of the Kingdom of Hawai'i.
For more than 100 years, Washington Place served as the governor's mansion for the Territory and State of Hawai'i. About 10 or 15 years ago, a new residence was constructed a short distance away. Today, Washington Place serves as a museum of Hawaiian history.
No scenes were filmed in Washington Place for Hawaii Five-0, although the residence is seen as Officer Sandy Wells drives McGarrett along South Beretania Street in "Loose Ends Get Hit" (Season 8).
