To Begin the 12-year Run . . .

Full Fathom Five (Season 1, Episode 1) aired 56 years ago, tomorrow, September 26, 1968.

Victor and Nora Reese (Kevin McCarthy, Louise Troy) are about as mean and self-serving as Wo Fat (Khigh Dhiegh) proved to be in “Cocoon” (Pilot). Victor sails aboard ocean liners with the express purpose of nabbing rich widows in order to fleece them of their fortunes, then kill them. When the story opens, he already has killed at least ten such women. While claiming to be saving up to buy a lot and build a house for the latest widow's pleasure, he actually owns a home on Tantalus Drive, the poshest area of O'ahu, no doubt purchased with funds extorted from his previous victims.

It's enough to make the bravest of souls afraid to travel alone.

Ah! But writer Ken Kolb knew it was time to interject a bit of comic relief and introduced attorney Tyler Skaggs (Phillip Pine) to his client, heiress turned hippie Martha Finch (Arlene McQuade) and her guitar-strumming financial advisor, Pepito (uncredited). McGarrett looked like he was half a step from bursting out laughing.

What a great way to start the 12-year run of our favorite police procedural, Hawaii Five-0. Why not bring it all back by watching it again. It is available on Paramount+, Pluto TV, Apple TV, Freevee, Google Play Movies, Fandango at Home, and on DVD.

Full fathom five, the widow lies

and of her bones are coral made . . .

I very well remember the Writing Challenge ("The Grand Finale" ): "What if...Full Fathom Five Had Been Written Just a Few Years Later.

"...Let us suppose: The episode had been written five years after women's liberation had begun to change the lives of women, enabling them to become independent and free."

BTW : Great musical score in the beach scene with Martha Finch, Tyler Skaggs, Pepito and McGarrett.
